When the K family contacted me and said they'd be interested in a laid-back session on their acreage, I was intrigued. Then the word "bonfire" was mentioned and well, they could have asked me to come that evening and I would have managed to rearrange my schedule somehow.
We started our morning with a hike through their acreage along with a discussion about tree life cycles and bug infections. (this was fascinating! The things you can learn from people amaze me.) We followed winding trails, trying to guess which might be the oldest, tallest trees and which trails were actually made by deer and therefore didn't lead back to the house.
After starting a crackling fire in their backyard, they whittled some marshmallow sticks, poured out the hot chocolate, and got to roasting. A few marshmallows got a bit over done, but I will happily eat a burnt one if someone else doesn't want to. We laughed and talked and truly enjoyed the bright Alberta morning.
Thank you, K family. It was a treat, and I'm so glad to have been invited to spend the time with you!
